Default Willys CJ5 Dana 44 front axle swap
Does anyone know much about what's involved in swapping a Dana 44 into the front of a 1960's era CJ5? I know they put them into the front of TJ's and such, but I was curious as to whether it could be done to a CJ. Also, disc brakes front and back, easy or hard? Any help would be appreciated.

Disk brake kit for a d44 is readily available. Check ebay. Front d44's though? Well anything can be made to fit anything if you know someone who can weld I suppose.

Heheh very good point about the front D44... but thanks a bunch for the disc brakes!! I never knew, seriously, I've been thinkin about it for ages!

Best option here is to grab a 44 open knuckle from a FSJ and get it cut down. Disc brake front end. Very do-able however the cost would run out about the same as the purchase price of another 2 or 3 CJ5's.
The Dana 30 in the front of the 5 was a very strong unit. Many a V8 was swapped into a 5 and the front diff survived it very well.

I've nothing against the D30, it's just that I'm stuck with the ol' D27,drums and all. Is the D30 the same width as the D27? If so I reckon I'll swap in one of those rather than send myself broke with a D44 on the front...

another source of rear 44's is izuzu light trucks such not sure of width

Why not just swap all the outers over and keep the housing?
