http://www.toyota.com.au/fj-cruiser/...ance/v6-engine

"FJ Cruiser has a 4.0L V6 engine with a Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and produces an impressive 200kW of power. So whether you're tackling a rocky incline, a sand dune, or even just a long stretch of open road, FJ provides all the power and acceleration you need.
When it comes to towing the V6 engine produces 380Nm of torque and provides up to 2250kg braked towing capacity [G6] . This means you can carry your favourite gear, no matter where you're going - whether it's a boat, a trailer packed with camping gear, or caravan"

You will need to keep the FJ Cruiser 'on the boil' when towing, whereas the Jeep is a much more relaxed tow.
Check the figures below......more so, the revs at maximum power & torque: -
FJ Cruiser
Max power - 200Kw @ 5600rpm.
Max torque - 380Nm @ 4400rpm

Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0TD
Max power - 184Kw @ 3600rpm.
Max torque - 570Nm @ 2000rpm.

The drive even when not towing is completely different.

Cheers, Craig

4400rpm for max torque tells me its a screamer. Will be back in the gears with the engine screaming as soon as you see a hill. You may need to buy yourself a petrol station as well. Fuel consumption will be high as soon as you make it do any work. Not a good tow car except for a 6x4 trailer to the tip.
The TD on the other hand probably will be at max torque at about 100km/hr. Very efficient & will lug along up & down hills without needing to change gears all the time.
Would be interesting to see the torque/rpm graph for the FJ.

The FJ engine is probably better suited to a boy racer who wants to red line in every gear off at the lights.
The comparison is like a second rate race horse v/s a Clydesdale.

If I wanted something oriental, probably would look at a Dmax. Havent looked at them though.

Dmax is down on torque as well, may be bullet proof but mine really lugs going up hill towing the penguin, sons Colorado with the 2.8 litre diesel is much better in the torque department, right up there.

As the others have said, sorry to see you go Scarps. Like you I've got a decision to make regarding a replacement in the new year - another GC? Or something else? My brother just went and picked up his new Disco - it is nice but gee it is expensive. And still no keyless entry or reverse camera. Anyway, good luck to you.

Thnx guys, appreciate the thoughts and feedback. Yes, one of the vehicles I'm looking at is the FJ Petrol Cruiser. The other is the current model Pajero. Some say an oldie but a goodie.

My dilemma in choosing is that I need a vehicle that will both tow the 1200kg CT as well as perform in the Vic High Country as a standalone 4by.
I did think a solution was to own 2 different 4wd's but swmbo said no to that.
