Default Crank Angle Sensor

For an XJ, is the CAS the same thing as a CPS? If not, what is the difference?

I last replaced the CAS in 2008 which was 12-13 years into my ownership of the car from new. Lets say 12. It is now 2020. This is 12 years since the previous replacement. I always carry a spare Mopar version.

What signs should I look for that this current CAS is on the way out? I know with the JK that there is a "hesitancy" in acceleration. I am starting to sense hesitancy or a gap in the engine noise when accelerating up hill or the car is at idle. It is a clunking sound when going up small hills and the auto shifts up to the next gear, unless I floor it and it holds gear. I don't think any gearing is gone or there is solenoid trouble.

However, in my last CAS failure, the car just stalled either at the traffic lights (while stationary), or when it finally gave up, while rolling. I managed to restart when it stopped at the lights and drive it home. But when it failed near Sydney airport (Giovani Brunetti bridge) in the middle of two blind merging southbound lanes, I must have had several heart attacks that morning. A truck and several cars narrowly missed totaling my car at high speed.

Is the current description of the engine noise gap (very brief and barely noticeable), a sign of imminent CAS failure? It sounds like this is what could happen in a JK from the descriptions I have read in that forum. My previous CAS failure was just a series of engine stalls, but the car was much quieter back then.

Have you tried pulling the codes out yet?
DO you know how to?
Very handy to help diagnose

Rainman, it is usually when the car has been running for a while. Not noticeable downhill, but noticeable on very gradual inclines where the auto transmission is deciding whether or not to jump to a lower gear. It kind of jolts (throttle sounds like it has momentarily stopped) when it downshifts/upshifts almost hesitant whether it should or shouldn't. If I kick it, it will climb the hill easily on the correct gear. Could it be something else in the driveline? I am only guessing it is the CAS as the MTBF was around 12-13 years the first time, and I am now at the next 12 year interval. The engine interruption is also apparent after the car has been running and remains at idle. No check engine lamp has appeared.

Will give it a try when I get the chance. I have a cheat sheet on it.

I think our friend in Hornsby has new, has complete new distributors at a God price.
Cheaper to buy a complete unit as opposed to individual parts.
Xjs have a poor design dizzy, that is notorious for flogging out in the shaft.
Check for excessive play in your dizzy cam, ( see if rotor has much outward side movement)
