Ctcss is code tone calling some UHF's (gme, icom etc) can be set to transmit a tone (inaudible) as you talk, it works such that radios set on ctcss will ignore any signal that doesn't have the tone.

works well when you don't want to hear all the other users around - just your mates.

unfortunately even though you can't here all the other non ctcss users, they can still hear you
