Default transmission flare

Hello.

Lately Im getting a bit of a transmission flare between first and second gear change. The rest of the gears change pretty smooth.

No MIL's.
any starting points? I have a new battery and charging system is working well.

could this as simple as a transmission fluid change ?

By 'flare' do you mean it's been slipping as it changes from 1st into 2nd?

If so, and it's been doing it a while, sorry but your second ratio clutch pack is probably toast.

How many k's on the car and has the tranny been serviced well and looked after?

PS. Obvious, but...we've seen it all...

Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

i might just change the fluid and give it a flush before I rip it off.

cars done 265,000 . i dont know how well its been treated. I picked it up from a farmer from rural NSW so i dont think its had an easy life. He used it to tow a fair bit so...

that Oversized 1-2/4-5 Overlap Control Valve Kit sound interesting but not worth time and dollars to do it at this stage.

If it only does it on the 1-2 change, then I don't expect changing the overlap sleeve will help, as the 1-2 and 4-5 shift groups are controlled by the same overlap sleeve.
It's a cheap bit of kit but not a lot of improvement if the flare comes from a used clutch pack. And zero improvement if the flare is caused by a broken sprag.

The NAG1 usually suffers from 3-4 flare and the biggest cause in my opinion is wear in the K2 clutch pack. I swapped my transmission with one with more wear in the K2 clutch pack and the flare got worse. I kept my valvebody, which had the entire overlap sleeve kit from Sonnax.

Does it only do it when hot?

noticeable only when cold or coming up to temp. Hot it still does it, but the flares are shorter.
