Unhappy WJ gearbox problems?

Hi all, i just bought a 99 WJ with a V8. The second i drove the jeep, i felt slipping and shudderig in the gearbox. i had it looked at, and was told there is something wrong with the third clutch. A second hand gearbox is the easy way out but will cost me close to $2500. The transmission specialist was unsure how much it would cost to fix the actual problem, as there would be great labour costs. Can anyone tell me where i can get a gearbox for cheap in melbourne? any advice would be much appreciated

did you get waranty with it? is it running genuine mopar tranny fluid?get a second opinion, jeeps are a funny breed not many people have a good handle on them, get it sussed by one of the jeep specialists down your way and not necessarily a stealership ,it could just save you big bucks.-keep us posted.

Good advice, these are normally a very reliable, durable gearbox. Mopar ATF+4 is critical, Dexron will kill our boxes.

i bought the jeep from an auction so i didnt get any warranty with it, but i did get the car for a pretty good price. The tranny specialist told me the previous owner did a tranny service before selling it. He said the tranny oil had been changed but im not sure if it was genuine mopar fluid. It could be genuine, as the car was only serviced at the dealership. If the box is slipping and shuddering in third, do you think mopar fluid would make a difference? im told there is an actual mechanical fault. thanks

I agree and also would suggest you look at getting the fluid replaced and the tranmission software reflashed. This solved some problems I was having with mine (and tell them to reflash it with the 5 speed software eg. for a WG as oposed to the 4 speed on the WJ).

How do you know if the gearbox is reflashed to the 5 speed, wouldnt mind getting mine done if its not already done.
