well I couldn't let this thread fade away without a fitting
Post Script ...........
(One last long winded story from me ... so get your Beer and read on)
4 days ago when I declared I had fixed it after finding the spark plug lead issue I fixed it the next day with some coat hanger wire to support the heater hoses and it sat there ...
I avoided driving it ... didn't really need to use it as I only went down the shop over the week-end so I used the PT ... I didn't even have the urge to test drive the XJ ... It was like I was almost scared to drive it ....
Until Today I Had to Move it ...... And decided to take it for a run down the shop (Munchies for Game of Thrones) .... I nervously turned the key Check Engine Light went out Fuel Pump turned Off and a crank for a few seconds and then Start/Perfect Idle ... The Smoothest it Has Ever Been!
SERIOUSLY! I am not saying this for creative writing purposes it Runs Incredible!! The Best ever since I have Owned the XJ .... Finally after all these Years its so clean and crisp feeling on the throttle that solenoid purge valve thing might of been leaking for years ? ... mind you bad spark to n5 didn't help either ... without the catastrophic failure I had this might of gone un noticed the valve that is lowering my engine efficiency and fuel economy? Its only a $50 part .. but might help older XJ's tune up a bit?
Very Happy XJ Owner

Great to hear it's running so well.
Do you have the part number for the purge valve?

Cheers,

Great news. Glad to hear it's running so well. Especially after all the trouble you've been through.

I came across this while browsing another matter
(how to set my Torque Lite & BAFX to read fuel trim)

Purge solenoid diagnosis...the symptoms match yours exactly

I have not ever seen this mentioned as a cause for either hard starting or rough running on any Jeep forum

I knew it was Too good to be TRUE! ......
I have been driving it all Week running Perfect! ......
The Missus takes it down the shop this morning and it Shit Itself! ..
I went down the road to Rescue Her and see what's Going On ?
It Starts fine but when you go to drive it Ping Ping Rattle and Die? ..
So I managed to get it off the main st and down the back street to home I had to pull over and re start about 6 times and I could only crawl at about 1200 rpm But I got it Home! I checked the wiring and vac hoses all good ?
I got the scanner out (Luckily these days I have a working PCM these days)
Code P0132 ..... O2 Sensor Low Voltage
Ok so at least I know this time and it really doesn't surprise me ..... Don't Mean it Doesn't Piss Me OFF! ....................!!!
I think the O2 sensor might of been fragile to start with ...
.............
........
.....
... 10 Mins Goes By
I had to go down stairs to take the Jeep off the battery charger I was giving it a top up ...... Your Not Going to Believe This! No BullShit
I put every thing away and was looking at the O2 wires I was thinking is it where I Cut and Spliced them? I fiddled with the crinkle heat covering as I had replaced it with new when I did the wires A Lot Of Slack?
Its getting dark but I could see down near the Air Cond compressor there is a wire that feeds into the O2 harness And Guess what was hanging down there? ....... The O2 Sensor Plug "WTF!" I had to look a couple of times But YES
I think I will get another BEER Stop Stressing ....and Fix it Tomorrow
