So sorry to hear Drover given I started this and also that puts me back in the ballpark as I may have the same given turning freely and then a minor lockup, less than 10nm think weak threads but ageing plastic just like the old Ford and Holden days on plastic coolant/vacuum tees. I’d be keen to see what you come up with Drover and I will do the same as your post means mine will come out and turfed given I cannot afford that in the middle of nowhere towing. Knowing my luck it would break on the spirit of Tasmania deck, now that would be a crowd pleaser.

That sux a lot mate....agree with the prices of upgraded pans...from memory (which aint that good) I reckon a deep dish metal pan with a drain plug for mine (not the u bute 8spdr) was near, or over, $600...bit exxy for my liking....memories a bit 'furry' but there was a few shops in OZ that stocked all sorts of pans....dont think it was an ebay search...think it was a Transmission parts 'google search'.....not much help (as usual)...but just another avenue to try....hopefully they will have it all sorted for you this arv...reckon you said you had a workshop you used in that location ????....and also recall the auto joint there having a good rep....good luck

Bugger...as you note, just lucky you weren't out back of no where!

I had a service done on the tranny in my last Jeep when I bought it. The oil pans apparently have the filter attached to the pan and have to be bought as a unit.

The tranny guy that did the service told me he used a replacement ZF pan that had a separate filter, so that next service when he dropped the pan he could replace the filter re using the same pan with a new gasket....much cheaper.

I will slide under that Jeep later this week and have a squizz at what it is made of plastic or alloy...

Well the Jeeperific is back , $640.70 less in my pocket plus $164 for the tow truck, 4 hrs from d driving out on the truck to when they rang me, new pan, deep dish $303, labour $160 and I think the oil was about $120 few cents here and there, anyway they said they have heard the odd plug letting go like that, not often...... So Ive had lifegard 8 in the box, Penrite BMV now its got Nulon in it, I trust this mob having dealt with them a couple of times over the decades so if they say its good thats enough for me, specs as Lifegard 6... certainly nice changes on way back........ think I might visit the daughter again in 40K km and get them to do the next service, hang the cost its so easy....

BUT if you have a leak from the pan drain just give it a service its easier than dumping everything on the floor... not a great pic but shows where the plug sheared off just above the O ring before the threaded area, looked just like a bit of metal which had a fracture break............. I think it had started to crack, hence the leak and me wriggling the hex head into it broke the camels back.....

I dont suppose you got the specs (Name ) of the Nulon Fluid, good to hear all good, $640 seems a good price compared to some prices thrown out there, just on a side note what was your procedure for moving the jeep, getting it out of park so it could be hauled up on the tilt tray

Price is right....total cost with the tow is a 'hit to the fun fund'....bugger....really like your thinking of going back/getting the service done by a shop...mine wasnt expensive for the service alone...good cost management...pity it was toooooo late but thats life....hoping its all fixed and your problems are behind you....ENJOY MATE

The Nulon stuff is "Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid Low Viscosity", specced as Lifegard 6, they use it in all ZF boxes. $65 for 4 lts at Supercheap, easier to link a page than throw a pic up.

With the Grand dead in the shed I just pulled the handle in the centre console, you open the lid remove the cover around the hinge underneath you see a little handle with orange strap taped down on it, in the handle there's a little catch which you flick to unlock with a small screw driver then lift the handle by the strap, it opens about 50 deg, the gearbox is out of park and the towy can winch the thing onto the tray, you don't want the lid to fall closed as it may damage the lever , you just reverse the procedure to get it all back to normal... its in the glove box book.
