Depends on what sort of equipment you have available... for example if you had an OBDII scanner you could see if it has any stored codes... other than that the usual rust and dings... look around near brakes to see if it’s leaking diff fluid from inner tube seals I don’t know much about the 3.8 as I own the newer 3.6.

It’s “normal” for the hard top to leak so look inside if there are signs that it’s more than “normal”..

Welcome to the club hopefully, that are an exceptional blank canvas to work from and exceptionally capable out of the box..

More to look for if it’s a rubicon

Get your local motoring organisation to inspect it.

Worth checking out if and when any of the calipers have been changed, especially the rear ones.
Changed my rear ones twice on my 2009.
Dont know if it has been the river crossings or just English weather or both, which you may not get in your hotter climate.
Front ones only changed the once at around 120,000 km but the rear ones are smaller.
Also the brake lines behind the drivers side inner wheel well liner are well clear.
Was a TSB on this but they only cut away some of the liner.
One of mine mustn't have been seated correctly in the guide / holder near the ABS and unknowingly still rubbed on the liner, wore thin and luckily broke when changing out the brake line rather than on the highway.

09 is old enough you can expect there to be some stress and compounding of abuse unless it is impeccable. Jeeps and WRX's are tough to get used because people use them for what they are intended.

Whether the user is a mental walnut and isn't using it correctly, well that is another matter all together.

My advice is to spend the small cash and go to a local shop who will look at it. Preferably someone with 4WD experience. They get calls all the time and they know the deal. PO's and used car dealers are very skilled at hiding problems just long enough for you to buy it and take it home.

If you're spending several K's on the Jeep, another few hundred which make save you thousands later is worth it. Besides - if they do find some ticky-tack stuff then you have a bargaining chip.

Default 2009 4 door unlimited

I think we have found the right vehicle, it is a 2009 4 door unlimited wrangler, with about 174k kms, has hardly been off road, no mods and hasn’t been cleaned at all, Doesn’t appear to have any leaks, underneath has no damage or scrapes has been on the beach once and owned from new by a young lady...... price is $17k, 4 new tyres and battery replaced recently... Because of the location, it is difficult to have someone inspect it, though we both drove it, it tracked well, brakes were good and no unlikely noises..

What sort of major items would I be expecting to replace in the next 40k of services?

Serpentine belt (NOW if not already done), brake disc and pads, Clutch (if manual); clutch slave cylinder (if manual)possibly all suspension bushes; F & R shock absorbers; front ball joints; F & R springs usual oil/air filters. Definitely maintain wheel alignment and balance.

The 3.8 L engine is can't kill... mine has done 230000km. 30m of this engine in USA powering all sorts of vans etc have done much much more.I have seen them over 300000. Check car sales to see what they are reaching.
