Linings may have been contaminated with brake fluid, or just be full of dust & out of adjustment. Shouldn't be too hard to sort out. Jeep brakes aren't known for over efficiency.

Jeepmum.....firstly let me say this...to have one only wheel cylinder (assuming you mean wheel cylinder and not master cylinder) replaced is unusual and, from a brake specialists point of view (close mate), quite worrying!! Lets look at the situation....why was the cylinder replaced?...if it was leaking fluid then it would suggest a complete brake system check would be in order, in most cases replacing one wheel cylinder, due to normal wear, is totally false economy as they generally wear at a constant and even rate, a bit like tyres.
If your brakes are locking up then my suggestion would be to take the vehicle to a specialist without a lot of delay, I would suspect one of two things, the master cylinder seals are worn and are applying pressure to the system at a non-steady rate, suddenly on and off as the vacuum system actuates. My second guess might be that a flexible brake hose has been damaged internally and is restricting the pressure relief as the pedal is released, effectively locking the brakes up. As mentioned earlier, the proportioning valve could also be suspect....it really is time to visit a specialist. Jimmy's suggestion re Mark Smith is a good one.

definitly agree with brizxj's comment about replacing one wheel cylinder being unusual and if it was leaking fluid replacing brake pads makes sense too with brake parts in general replace both sides not one at a time as this is definitely a false economy

Another minor problem could be the rear breaks are just adjusted out too tightly against the drum.

Try taking off the drums and winding the adjuster to move the shoes slightly inwards.

I know they are meant to be self adjusting but when they are set too far out to start with they dont move back inwards they can only adjust outwards.

Might be a worth checking for a quick free fix before spending $$$

I had the same problem when I fitted new shoes

Hope this helps

cheers

Jake.

Thanks for all the responses guys.
I had to have the brake fixed as it burnt out and seized up going down my sisters driveway in reverse.......Oyster Bay hill.......very steep.
I didnt have a problem with them before this.
As was usual I was a woman away from home who needed to have it fixed so I could get home.
I had been told that replacing one side was not a good idea, but the place I took it to could only get parts for the one side so that was how it came about I only had one side done.
Also, I dont think they knew jack anything about Jeep.
Its been a huge pain so far, and I have just replaced the tyres and now am looking at shockies, so when they go on, I will have the brakes done as well.
It is so intermittent, generally worse if I have to stab thebrakes on suddenly, its been known to put me into a nice slide in the wet, and as it is my only transport I have been trying to manage it as cheaply as possible. Which is really false economy seeing as how it could kill someone.
Thanks, I shall take it to the guru mentioned.
