Thanks all. Sounds like I'll be carrying my 2nd FOB around in the toolbox.

Re: cruise control. No error codes present. And no cruise controls. Maybe
someone did change out the steering. Sounds a little scary to be honest.

I imagine I should be able to find some disconnected wiring in the dash.
I'll have a look.

For the record, image attached shows the graphic on the overhead console.

It is easier to determine if you have cruise control .. Show us a pic of the engine bay .. The cruise parts are on the left side of the engine and go over the top of it to the throttle body.
also a pic of the steerinig wheel wouldbe nice as well.. Into steering wheels!

While your happy snapping, one of the remote.. It is possible it is possible it is after market? Especially if the vehicle is a private import ,
.. The VIN number gives all that away ..leave off the last numbers for security.

But who knows what other worms jump out of the tin, especially if you go to an earlier model PCM.
The OP was asking about the immobiliser functionality and how to disable, however he also has a Cruise light and no controls ... changed steering wheel maybe?
If the OP is having issues with his immobiliser already I wonder if it won't be long before it shuts down altogether. I would seriously be looking at a early 96 ECU without an immobiliser built in or one that hasn't had the function turned on, (I believe some pre updates had the choice). If it has codes then they can be deleted.

Regards A

No, they typically play up intermittently, not all will "fail altogether"...which is good because there would be quite some sad XJ owners out there by now.
Although I understand they came from factory "disarmed" and where activated once arrived in the country. That would imply that the dealer would be able to again "disarm" the feature, but apparently it is not as simple as that. Or at all possible.

The FSM explains the arming as happening after 20 or so ignition start cycles, so the dealer has no control over it.
