You can do it but the downside is forgetting to turn it on. With so various switches in the Jeep, you may forget to turn it on after having it turned off for whatever reason, eg: water crossings
The other switch shown in the right photo I rigged up as well so that I could leave the fan to be run by the ECU, switch off for water crossings, and turn on at any time. The middle red wire comes from the wire that controls the fan. It is cut on the firewall side of the under bonnet fuse box, before the relay. On my RHD 95 it is a purple with pink stripe wire and grounds when the ECU wants the fan to turn on on 91+ XJ's. The rear wire on the right photo returns to the wire cut at the fuse box for when the switch is forward. The front wire just goes to ground for when the switch is rearward and is the manual override to turn on the fans at any time.

I bought a 12v flashing led wired up to run with a relay when the switch was off.
i used the missile switches, easy to see if its not set to factory. no blinking light- would drive me nuts. would use a blinking led for a low oil pressure or over temp alarm though.
god luck with it.

Yeah, quite like that actually and I might just put the switches on both Jeeps.
I nearly cooked the 4.7 alloy head V8 when the fan controller died and also the JK when TIPM died,(controls the fan) so that will serve annoyingly well.
I found this interesting youtube vid heb talks about upping your idle speed to increase voltage in the first part of the vid then gets down to talking about the fan bypass switch
You just have to put up with the Bla Bla American Bullshit
I like the idea of the fan switch for traffic and slow 4x4ing I am yet to check the FSM as my Haynes wiring diagram was useless.......
He is talking 97 and later C2 wire which is Blue with a Pink stripe I hope the 96 is the same looks like a easy mod
Took my Beasty Boy dog Herbie out the bush today to Unleash the Beast and let him run wild it was Hot! although the XJ sat on a constant 100 perhaps the new clutch fan has made a difference...............
Anyway I like the idea of the fan mod so I can control the temps better
