and that's not a broad statement? How bout we stick to the title of the topic rather than starting a conversation that is guaranteed to polarise view?

What's you families military history?
My grandfather was stationed in Iran during WWII as a US Army MP guarding German POWs.

My father served three tours of duty in Vietnam flying off the USS Kitty Hawk. Lost a couple of fast movers but at least made it back over water every time before having to bail.

My kid brother is a squid and has been for a little over 20 years now. He started out doing the secret squirrel stuff in Amchitka and Dam Neck. Nowadays in the Reserves, he does alot of military funerals with a ceremony unit.

Definately the best Battalion Chilli. You are right in saying it went down hill when the above mentioned were put in control, very sad days. A big reason for this was to try and clean up the apparent brutality and neo-nazi culture the public was led to believe existed within the unit.

This was also the start of an era where blokes started to sign up for the money of overseas deployments, not for the love, honour, camaraderie and esprit de corps of serving your country along side blokes with the same feelings and values.

As with you, this was also what led to my discharge from a job i took great pride and honour in doing, along with many of my mates.

At the end of the day, all of these things are apparently meaningless, when on paper new recruits fill Battalions, and the budget remains the same.

Hate to start a pissing contest mate, but 12th/40th Battalion, Royal Tasmania Regiment has more battle & theatre honors than any other unit in the Australian Army...

We're lucky down here to be part of such a distinguished lineage... Even if we are only part-time these days... ;-)

How about stopping living off other peoples deeds and reputations. Go overseas, play on the two-way rifle range for a while, then you can come back and trash-talk other people and their units if that is your bag. Otherwise you might like to just keep to the thread - or start your own.

They are responding to a question that was asked. No need to go on the attack...

Not trash-talking anyone's unit mate (Especially not THAT one... Got a lot of mates who still call 3RAR home). Just having a friendly dig...

Apologies to the moderators... Back on topic.
