Default It goes

Finally

All it turned out to be was a loose injector line between the two rails
After a short drive around this morning, what a difference.

No more push the accelerator, make a cup of tea, then get ready for take off
Turbo lag almost completely gone and way more responsive

And I've done pretty well, with only a few left overs


And if I had to do this job again, I wouldn't do it during the middle of Summer in Far North Qld
This was a very difficult job, with alloy bolts all different sizes,
be sure to keep them in separate lots as you disassemble your motor.

Now, what's next?

Default Lower Control Arms

When I initially got the Jeep the first things replaced were the notorious front prop shaft CV and front diff bushes.

Even after replacing those parts there were still knocks in the front end annoying me
And the steering was all over the place.
Sometimes it'd pull left, other times right

Inspection of the front end revealed the lower control arm bushes were stuffed too.
It's a fairly simple job to remove the lower control arms.


With some simple tools the bushes came out easily enough too
By drilling the rubber, the inner bush fell out.
Hammer & chisel to remove the shells.


Pressing the new ones in required a large hydraulic press.
A mate had one of those cheap as units with a bottle jack.
Well we managed to bend, twist and generally stuff his press
Wheel alignment, long drive and it was pulling to the left real bad.
At least some of the knocks were gone

Default Upper Control Arms

Apart from the knocks driving me nuts,
the front tyres were scrubbing out really bad
Finally managed to track down the noise to the upper control arm inner bushes.
Everytime I'd hit the brakes the inner bushes would slide forward


I needed to drop the struts to remove the inner bolts.


After removal the top ball joints were showing no movement but
there was no tension left in them.
A new set of bolts & JBA Upper Arms fixed all that.


Wheel alignment at John Muller in Townsville.
What a different car.
It goes straight ahead.
Can steer it with one finger.
Now I've only got brake pad rattle to annoy me.

Default New Tyres

After getting the front end alignment sorted,
the tyres were really stuffed.
Set of 17x8.5" Jeep rims and some Yokohama Geolander tyres
Managed to get five LT 265/70R17 for the price of four
Run many a set of Geolanders on the work utes.
They're quiet in the dry, great in the wet and float well on the sand
Their biggest drawback is the gap between the tread blocks
is just the right size to pick up little pebbles.
Don't have mud up here. Choose sand, bull dust or coal
Being LT (light truck) they are 10 ply, so heavier than standards too.


Of course the new tyres rub, don't they


So FBH & some bitumen paint later


The inner guard was jammed between the tyre and seam
In no time it rubbed a hole right through
Cut to fit the folded seam & screw to hold it


Bit of fibreglass to cover it all up and some more bitumen paint

Default Wider Tyres

With wider tyres and an increased track,
the rubber was sticking out past the guards.
Simplest fix was two laps of double sided automotive 3M tape


Add some wheel arch flare from Clark Rubber


Will probably need some pop rivets to hold the rubber in place

Bigger tyres means the spare wont fit between the rear chassis
Sort that out another time

Default Increased track

Bigger tyres have resulted in slower turn in but more feel at the steering wheel
Definitely noticed the traction control kicking in on full lock
Increased track means the front tyres are now scrubbing
The ride has improved and feels more stable in corners too
Go the Jeep with no name

Default Evaporator

Been waiting for summer to go away in up here.
Doesn't look like it's gunna happen anytime this year
This week's job is to fix the air-con
And for once the factory manual was fairly good with it's directions


The evaporator was leaking, even after re-gassing the air-con was still warm
Disassemble the HVAC housing


New evaporator from USA
Still got here quicker and cheaper then genuine Jeep


Because it always felt like the heater was on,
whilst it's apart I will double check the blend door in the airflow box too


The dash board assembly is blood heavy
Do yourself a favour and remove the gearshift and handbrake
Lessens the need to be a weightlifter and contortionist at the same time
