Default Coolant Leak from Rear of Engine

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. It has been always been serviced by Jeep and has 70,000km on the clock.

So while on a trip recently I experienced a coolant leak from the rear of the engine. The car was towed back to Jeep for repair.

Long story short I was told that it was the hoses at the back of the engine and to replace them the engine had to come out. I am now up for $4000 in parts and labour.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Yep had that happen to my MY14,
only cost $1800 in parts and labour here in Perth WA. was a 6 hour job to get the rubber hose. Jeep mechanic says very common and based on the use of the car, more heat/towing and 4wd, the rubber hose wear quick. They call it a turbo water feeder, just the rubber hose bit needs repairing, but the whole feeder hose it 800-900bucks, for a rubber hose!!!!!
It happened at @105,000km on the clock. Such a bad design, they should use steel re-enforced hose for that.

Sad to say it, mine will be trade in after the lease end in June, back to a toyota, never hear of a rubber hose costing 1800 to replace in any car i owned, serious big issue if I was remote.

I was bored, so i did a bit of research for you.

Yes, the official book calls for an engine removal. But smart mechs figured out a much cheaper and easier way.

This is your tube and the cost..

https://www.moparpartsoverstock.com/...8242889AA.html

And others have had the identical rubber section split. An interesting forum here: https://www.ecodieselram.com/forum/t...-failure.1743/

And the fix is this: "Mine was the turbo coolant feed line, too. I think you got ripped off, though. Its not that hard to get to. Remove top harness, injector hard lines, turbo elbow, and intake manifold. Then its right there."

How good are you on the tools? I would tell Jeep to stick it. Get your part expressed over from the states and while you are waiting, take the above mentioned parts off including the hose.

Or, option 2, get the hose from the states, get your car back, show a mobile mechanic the thread and get him to replace it. Probably save yourself about $3000.

Hope this helps give you some ideas and options...

Cheers,

Thanks, I had seen that post as well in my research.

I too went to the US and the total parts USD are $300.00 I have called FCA and they suggested to get the dealer to put in a good will claim which I will know about tomorrow. Unfortunately the engine is out of the car as you can see.

If the answer from Jeep is no then I will present the cost of the parts and ask why there is such a mark up.

Is the hose split ?? Or is it just leaking at the clamps. Not sure I would just replace with the same part and have it maybe fail again. Would look to use a better quality hose and clamp.
This would be much cheaper than the genuine hose replacement.

My 2011 GC has the same Fiat motor. .Anybody know if this early version has the same hose or is it only fitted to the 2015 -on Eco diesels.? All the Mopar sites only list it for 2015 motors on.? I also have to ask why FC state the engine has to come out when the hose is located under the inlet manifold.? I would definitely be asking FC for recompense. What happens if it goes again in another 70000ks.
NB Obviously the part is not fit for the purpose intended.Ask the dealer to keep the old hose and get expert advice for a report on its durability.Your hose looks as if its been weeping from the ends where it goes into the pipe. Premature hose failure can occur when incorrect ratio of coolant/water is mixed up .Interesting to get a sample of coolant and have that tested also. 70000ks and always serviced at the dealer adds up to a premature failure.!!

WOW! Glad I have a 2012 regarding this issue!

Why are parts so expensive? Because businesses can charge whatever they want for products. Despite what lefties want, we aren't a socialist society.

You can likely buy EXACTLY the same part directly from China, where Jeep gets them from anyway. I did that with the rear foglights. One was cracked, ordered a pair from China via eBay for $17 delivered. Took two weeks ish. Jeep wanted over $50 for ONE!
