16's are to small to fit over brakes.
How is going to 17 a downgrade?
Larger sidewall of a 17" tyre is better offroad.

They do them in an 18".

Had them on my WH Grand in 17's. Awesome tyre and get great reviews......and they aren't expensive.

Cheers, Craig
Thanks I will definitely check these out.

Thanks - I really just meant that I would get other rims/tyres dedicated for mud at some point, but I take your point about 16"s specifically and will keep that in mind.

I just meant given I want to stick with the 18" rims (and get a mud set later) the shorter sidewall you mention would actually be better for the majority of driving it will be doing on road. Until I get a second set of rims the STT Pros/Deegan38's will be a compromise I'm very happy with I think.

I had the same issue with my Overland when I bought it...had 18" wheels and H/T road tyres (why, Jeep...why???).
I made some good ebay purchases, ended up with a set of stock JK 17" alloys, a set of almost brand new 255/75x17 A/T's off a Rubicon who was going bigger.....sold my 18" and H/T tyres to someone who didn't use their JK offroad.
All up, I ended up pretty much even, maybe a couple of dollars ahead, and now have my preferred 17" wheels.
I've since picked up a set of new wider 17" alloys that a guy was selling cheap (near half price)....these will be the wheels I use when I set up to new tyres (STT Pro) and go 33" or maybe even 34".

If anyone is wanting a set of the stock 17" wheels I have a set in near perfect condition a few tiny scuff marks here and there that some would be welcome to.

Deagan are a relatively new release, might be tricky to get a full review. Listed as 50/50 in MT speak they are more or less a form of road/AT designed with 4wd tyre structure for high speed off road on flat dirt. Kind of.

The MTZ in the pre-Deegan form had more tread and I found them great on hwy -mentioned that before. But if you want off road ability with more hwy bias the Cooper STT Pro is the right move.

Cooper and MT are manufactured at the same place I believe, and can be considered part of the same family.

Compared to others, they tend to be softer, better grip (on and off) but wear quicker. The o ly real difference between the various Cooper/MT is the tread design. (Yes, that's an over-simplification.)

I doubt you'd be unhappy with the Deegan but I dont think they offer much over the STT on hwy, if anything, on a light truck like a JKU. STT Definitely better off road.

I had some Maxxis Bighorn 762's on my XJ that did 75,000km and they were brilliant! Top tyre on wet bitumen and awsome off road. Prices have gone up quite a bit since I purchased them so am going to have a go at the Kanati 'Trail Hog' in a 265/70/17 for my JK. They have a big following in the US and are getting good raps here and are probably 2/3 the price of the STT ot MT, Kinda like the Maxxis were when they first came out.
The trail Hog comes in 3 18' Sizes and is a nice crossover tyre with mud style side biters and close central tread. http://www.bosmantyres.com.au/kanati-tyres
