Mine is an Icomm with controls on the mike. The unit is tucked up under the glove box and the mike is on a mike holder next to the driver's left knee - I use it a lot on trips so I want the mike within quick reach.
My antenna is a spring base on the passenger guard so I can change to different whips - a stubby 4 dB in very hilly terrain, a 500 mm 6 dB for general use and a 1500 mm 7 dB for desert, flat land duty. The long whip is good because it sticks up above the hybrid camper I tow so the signal is strong behind me and if the antenna fits under an obstacle, the camper will.
The antenna is probably the most important part of your system if you want good range.
