Side impact airbags are not dangerous to children because they deploy into a cavity. If you look at the ceiling/Window relationship in a side airbag equipped vehicle you can see where the airbag deploys straight down, it does not effectively intrude into the cabin, this is the issue with front airbags, the expand into the cabin area, and therefore are dependant on the relationship of the airbag to occupant, ie. where it will hit you, and as such people under a certain height risk neck injury.
