Look for some fibreglass rod or just buy a commericial one which will be far easier to transport.

I've done Beachport about 8 times now, with conduit every time without an issue, including 100k/h on the road back to base. I've probably made a new flag most years because I forget/can't find the old one, and I'm still way up on buying an expensive one.
The biggest issue is mounting, but I usually just gaffa it to the spare tyre carrier on the TJ. This year I did do a new model that was taller, just cut it in half so it fit inside the Jeep on the way there and then just used a tape and joiner.
Also rigged up a proper bracket for it this time around.
That said, keep an eye out in the bargain bin at Rays and the like, I know a few who have picked up the squid poles for $15.
