You can use a tc lock switch to engine brake down scrabbley hills.
Perhaps not really recommended in terms of gearbox longevity but desperate circumstances........
Using a switch in lew of automatic lock up when driving around would get old real quick.
Brake circuit high (+12v)is a input into tcm, it will not lock the tc while the brake circuit is earthed like when the Break peddle depressed

Just in case where did you buy the 3 pack of solenoids from?

I put a jumper wire from the trans harness into the cabin on one of mine when the TC lockout wasn't playing ball. Hooked it up yo a multimeter and went for a drive. Told me it was getting signal. If your TPS is playing up it can stop it too.
I got new solenoids from "rock auto".

I think those cars used the AW4 asian warner transmission and if so they were notorious for cooking the fluid a nasty shade of black even in normal use.
The TC solenoid not locking maybe a symptom not the cause of your problems, the trans temp amongst other info is used by the ECU to determine TC lock up, if you have a worn trans with internal slippage its internal temp may be causing a unlock command.

The later (around 1999 and on) 6 cylinder cars used the torqueflite based 4 speeder which are a derivative of the old mopar big block trans and they are very durable trans.

1. correct. All 87 - 2001 XJ's used this transmission. What you say about them also correct.

2. Maybe on 6Cyl ZJ & WJ's, but not on our XJ's.

Cheers.

.
The ECU does not know the trans temp.

Okie dokie,

Ran through a series of tests today.
Pulled the tcm out, had 12v
Tested each solenoid 16 ohms each.

For reference,
c14 is 12v power for the tcm
D14 is the tcc 16 ohms tested with lead to neg terminal of battery
D15 s1 solenoid 16 ohms
D16 s2 solenoid 16 ohms

Dropped the pan off the tranny and took the solenoids out to test.

S1 S2 are activating correctly. TCC is rooted.

Moving forward will do a full flush of fluid. Replace the tcc solenoid. There was a bit of sludge in the pan probably the clutch packs wearing down. Put it all together

Buy a second hand box to rebuild with a valve body mod.
