Default Stuck in neutral

Odo 102,000 kms and 100,000 km service done.
No previous indications that anything is amiss with my Trailhawk.
  1. Start car
  2. Trying to select D - the lever goes thru R with a disconcerting clunk, then gets stuck in N
  3. Lever will not move to D or R
  4. Dash is showing "Service Park Brake" with a warning light
  5. For the next 3 or 4 minutes gear lever is stuck until it suddenly, and smoothly, moves back through R to P
  6. Turn off car, wait overnight, try again in the morning
  7. Repeat steps 1-5

Got the car towed to the mechanic who services it.
His scan tool showed a bunch of error codes all related to ECU.

Car is now in the hands of Adelaide City Jeep.

To be continued.......

I was going to get a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk, though I settled on a 2 door JL Wrangler.

When I was doing research, I learnt that on the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee, the ECU is the most likely thing to fail.

After (I think) 1st Jan 2017, Jeep Australia changed its warranty to 5 years.

I understand that the ECU is easy to replace. Some have complained that it takes ages to get the parts in. All the best!

Car is fixed.

Turns out that the transmission control unit had lost its memory.
The TCU was reprogrammed and everything is working fine.

Apparently this can happen if the battery is dodgy, but my battery checked out okay, so the "cause is undetermined".

I'm a bit concerned that something like this can happen without an apparent cause, so I'm hoping it is one of those weird one-off things.

The diagnosis and fix cost $200, plus a tow fee.

This issue happened just over a week after I got back from a big trip to the Head of the Bight and then to the Flinders Ranges.

Glad it happened at home and not during that trip - the idea of being immobile and stuck in neutral halfway between Blinman and Parachilna isn't very appealing.
