Check out my Ride(s)
Default XJ ABS(or lack there of)

Any one out there with experience on 97 XJ abs systems and installation/wiring locations ?

Am looking at a XJ whose previous owner thought that 4WD vehicles did not legally require ABS so removed it !!!!!!!!!

Much of a job if you have a spare one (Complete XJ for parts/wrecker)?

Not that I can be of much help answering your question, but my 2005 TJ came factory delivered without ABS. I don’t have an issue without it, but in the wet I do need to be extra careful as it easily locks up.

How much of it did the PO remove?
I bet it still has all the tone rings on the axles in place. He probably didn't bother to remove the sensors from each wheel either.
Has he disconnected the ABS pump and removed it? They are quite cheap to find used on Ebay, or at the wreckers.

You will have to do an assessment of exactly what parts are missing then calculate the costs. I bet you can do it cheap as.

Here is a copy of the 1997 XJ factory service manual. I checked it, and there is plenty of info on the ABS system including wiring diagrams..

its more likely been disabled..possibly cause the ABS unit was dysfunctional
(like my '96 Limited spare)

does it still have the ABS pump in the LH engine bay ?
I cant imagine anyone would remove that, as re-piping would be needed

An ABS equipped vehicle will have an ABS light on the dash cluster.
...mine does not illuminate even though the ABS is disconnected, brakes work fine

there would be no reason to change axles

best clarify the situation, might just be a failed/unplugged ABS unit, needs replacing, one on Gumtree recently

I have a pre-update 95 sport. The ABS only came with the Limited even though I did have the ABS lamp available on the instrument cluster. At the time of purchase, I did enquire about having ABS fitted as an add-on and the stealer said it would be too complicated and was not worth it. He said if it was such a deal breaker, it was best to go with a limited. I stuck with the sport, and did add the cruise control. I have read somewhere that the ABS can be problematic off road which is why I think they kept it in the Limited.

In the Update series, not sure if there were two models (one with and one without the ABS). I know there was a crappy "sport" decal in some of the updates, but was every update vehicle a "sport" with the same spec?

25 years later, I have (been extremely lucky) not locked my brakes to the point that I have skidded out of control. I have literally stood on them at times but always having the car in FT 4WD has kept some stability. In the rain or on the freeway, you have to allow for an even greater stopping distance.
