Smile Update From : xy4x 95XJLimited

This is a follow on from the previous post "XJ ABS or lack there of"
I have now owned the XJ for a few months now and it has earned it's stripes and is worth spending some money on it. The previous owner had let things get out of hand and the receipts I got were amazing, classic example of not selling as is without roadworthy or spending more than what it was worth to provide a roadworthy. IE newer 170K MTR, New PS Pump ,Radiator ,WTR Pump, ball joints, MTR Mounts, RAD/HTR hoses and gaskets. I would hate to think of the labour as two Mechanics(so called) had a go after the first gave up as too hard. I am now learning that 25YO nylon is brittle and how XJ power windows and seats work. A mate at work has a 3D printer and is keen to have a go at replicating the nylon gears, I will keep you posted as how successful they are.
Thanks to alexbrown64 for the work he has done on the Compass/Temp module, I was going to ignore the not working display but the photos looked so retro I have to have them Working. Got a replacement universal 12V remote that will replace the original IR unit I hope, again I will keep you posted.

In short I LOVE the XJ and now know why the are becoming collectable, the only thing close that I may have bought was a Toyota FJ Cruiser but they were overvalued and I wanted something that I could work on.

all the parts you replaced are what you would expect, not hard, everything is pretty easy, mechanics must be shite, the electrics can be tricky, but fixable

I did a write up on fitting one of those cheap ebay door kits...quite easy, works great

XJs are very cheap, and can be made into a formidable 4wd..they are light too...an advantage off road

Can’t compare an FJ cruiser with an XJ. In 25 years time your XJ will still be running. No way an FJ could do that. They are disposable like the rest of the newer cars are.

If you go on Red Book, a new 95 limited wad 50,000 dollars. Your getting a lot of bang for your buck now.
Once sorted, they are a beast.
It’s great having everything working. I keep on top of everything..power seats, int wipers, compass etc. The engines are solid, but got to maintain them.

Cheers,

Admitedly I had 2 Insurance payouts, but my XJ (and 2 spare XJ), with many spares and improvements still owes my less than $3000

I wouldnt consider selling it for twice that...and I dont think most people would buy it for that anyway

as far as I know, all spare parts are still available, although some are very scarce or need to be found used.

I know for a fact this is not the same for a similar vintage Pajero, no front driveshafts, even when I had one over 15 years ago, now I hear no Tocata airbag, they offer you $900 for your car instead, illegal to rego it

Thanks for your responses, I agree with them all.
My XJ still had the dealership order quote form in the owners manual $60k, the exchange rate must have been bad back then.

Alex I will send you a PM so I can get a copy of the cct diag for the temperature and compass unit

Dang, $60k? What spec did you guys order? My mum ordered ours in 1995 from the local dealer, sport classic, aircon, power windows, that's about it... As I recall the final price was $44k, still have all the paperwork in the file somewhere. $60k must be a hell of a lot of options ticked over ours
