Never overfill a turbo diesel with oil. Some can suffer from diesel runaway. If it happens it will destroy the engine. Used to be quite common with old merc turbo diesels. The oil gets splashed around by the crank & ends up feeding through the vent to the inlet & then the engine just takes off revving until it goes bang. When 4wding & the oil is being splashed around by the bumps it is more likely. On engines prone to it, you run at the 1/2 way mark, never over the full mark.

Yeah fair call mate.

The oil pressure gauge goes just below 3/4 when cold and drops down to the line between 1/2 and 3/4 when cruise set at 100km. At 60km its exactly half way when warmed up. Sound normal?

Since around 2001 Mercs have had an oil level sensor.

They're a PITA in my experience, once I was driving my CRD C Class down the motorway at 160 or so, then a big red screen popped up on the dash saying add oil now. A little freaky when you first see it.
