I went for a run up here last weekend with a few of the guys from the Patrol 4x4 forum. What an absolutely, wonderful, beautiful day. It was paradise. The ferry was only $7.00. Cash only, no eftpos. So cheap for a gateway to heaven. It starts off after you get off the ferry on a bitumen road for quite a few km's until you come to the beach ramp. I originally had aired down to 18psi. The first in section of the beach is very soft and dug up and I found I had to stop and air down more. I went to 15psi and this was spot on. High range is the go. After the soft spots are done it is a legal, signposted 80 km/h run. It was like driving on a highway. A few washouts, but not too bad, and the water you will drive through heading up to Double Island point is actually fresh water run off from the cliffs. We stopped and went for a swim up near the lighthouse for lunch. Then back down the beach up Freshwater track which takes you through the rainforest and eventually comes back up on the main road to go back into Gympie. The whole day cost me about $200.00. Ferry, fuel, food and Gateway tolls. You gotta do it. You need a permit and they are $11.00 online. Get Cooloola region permit from the QPWS site.
The rangers office to get the printed out permit is where you line up for the ferry. Next time we go we are staying overnight. $5.00 a person to camp over. We got onto some dart. Worms are the go. Cast over the second set of breakers. They hit hard and fast. We got a few. We didn't get around to Mudlo. It was getting late in the day and tides. No of us wanted to end up on hall of shame of getting washed out.
Yep I love living on the doorstep to that! Bout 5mins to the ferry for me!

I loved it. It was so relaxing. Being single I can do these things now. So much to do and so many places to go. I had a great Saturday. The 3hr drive back home was like a run down the corner shop for me.
