Default New Start Motor Dead Already?

Purchased a new starter motor 6 months ago to replace a failing junkyard spare the car had originally come with, I thought I'd at least get 12 months out of it but I barely managed 4 months use (car sat for 2 months waiting to have the front chassis welded up) and it's now dead, ignition keys, car attempted to crank then nothing... oh the shame of being flat bed delivered (I should ask about frequent flyer bonuses)

I'll be heading down to the Auto Elec's tomorrow to see if they'll honour some sort of warranty with this stuffed starter... worst possible time of the year

Any ideas what's causing my (hungry) Jeep to eat starter motors?

Oh the shame and indignity of being flat bed delivered...

Does it have the typical cherokee oil leak?

If not, they should warrant it.

Which typical leak is that?

Yeah I need to replace the oil adapter/pump housing O rings (the kit is in the glove box ready to go) but the starter is still 99% clean.

I've just completed a bench test and the solenoid is happily click clacking away but the electric motor just won't kick over... I'd pull it apart and have a look if it weren't for the "voiding of warranty" issue.

LOL ok the oring one.

If it was brand new it -should- have at least 12months warranty

Failing that, do you have a test light?
Does the wire leading to the motor part have power when the solenoid is activated and the main power terminal has power also?

Starter had disintegrated internally, throwing a bar/arm off the commutating plane (where the brushes ride) with all the debris going further into the unit.

Auto Electrician had the parts rep/dealer organise a replacement unit... totally covered

Perhaps I should grab one of these and put in a second starter motor along with the necessary tools?

Sounds like a Chinese starter.

Possibly... no particular markings on the case (unlike the one it replaced), paid $270 retail for it but I'm glad I did as warranty's from a bricks and mortar store is more easily satisfied than an eBay/online retailer (not that there aren't good online sellers), saw similar cased units online for $160.00 (shipped) so I guess 2 for $270.00 isn't bad

Did I mention the SWMBO's idea of first aid for the Jeep is a grenade? LOL
