Default Jeep 2.7 Help

Hey,

I have a 2004 wj Crd and have slowly been replacing parts over the last few days trying to get her running properly,

I took off the engine cover and found alot of black crap every where and what looks to be wet oil around all the injector bases,

I've attached a photo to get some opinions

The jeep runs fine it's real world fuel economy is around 8.1/100kms around the suburbs and makes plenty of power and torque,

It does blow a huge plume of black smoke on hard acceleration during overtakes or entering traffic and occasionally at idle there is a slight black constant smoking,

Thanks In advance

Hate to say it but you have The Black Death, just search here for Black Death there is a thread on the subject which should have a link in Everything 2.7 sticky but it hasn't been added yet.
Basically if you get it early enough all should be good just require new washers for the injectors but read the thread, as well as the Everything 2.7 sticky and you should be right.

What specific running issue are you throwing parts at. Just throwing parts at it can be a very costly exercise. Have you had any codes read from the ECU and who/how did you do it.

Your biggest issue right now is you have a serious case of black death. Suggest you start searching "Mercedes Benz black death" on google or simply "black death" here or on any MB forum. It has been covered world wide in detail as this engine is very common in MB cars and mostly Sprinter vans. You have leaking injector seals. They need to be pulled the seats recut and new seals, bolts and proper antiseize lube applied. You have to decide if you want the hassle of dropping the engine or cutting an access hole in the wiper panel under the windscreen to access injectors 4 & 5. Most cut the hole, dropping the engine is several hours work.

Start reading here:

Oh and grab that engine cover and hang it on the wall of the shed as abstract art. Best thing you can do is be looking at those injectors etc on a regular basis.

Thanks for the quick replies guys

The main issues I was throwing parts at was a noisy waterpump and stuck Thermostat after the oil cooler split and threw oil all in the coolant system and stuffed everything up,
And I also had all the high pressure hoses for the power steering and hydro fan rebuilt as all were leaking,

So parts replaced are:

Oil cooler
Waterpump,
Thermostat housing unit
Heatercore as it was highly contaminated with engine oil
Bottom radiator hose
All hoses for the power steering and hydro fan with the proper mopar fluid,
Cleaned out all the intercooler piping

And full cooling system flush,

It's throwing a couple of codes which I checked by doing the key on/off

They are as follows:
P0340 which is cam position sensor
P1130 which has something to do with fuel pressure??

The jeep is running spot on apart from the smoke issues....

How can I clean up all the black crap as it's like bitumen lol

Thanks for the links guys

Edit:

I just checked and all 5 injectors are leaking and it's already had a section under the window cut out??? So I think it's had problems before.

But you do such a better explanation than I do fester me old mate..................your at the right place for advice of this insidious evil thing seanfgxr6 and thats a bastard of a name to type.
And you posted at the same time and WOW you have covered about all the problems that can beset a 2.7 CRD..................if you have a Bosch Diesel shop near let them at it for your injectors, they know the Merc Engine far better than other machanics, read and troll thru the links fester listed and you should find a heap of answers, takes awhile but the info is all there. Fester will chime in with a more detailed post than my ramblings.

No I won't....well yes I will sort of. Best bet on the cleaning up is to start reading through some of those MB forum threads. Luckily for me I haven't experienced black death yet, unfortunately for you I can't give you first hand experience. Jason (bodgie) might have, I can't remember. You will find someone here who has attacked it a bit but you will find far more on the MB forum. I think the bottom line is soaking in stuff like WD40, thinners, acetone etc as it is a bituminous/petroleum based crap. Chipping off carefully in places where you won't hurt things with like a little sharp scribe. Soaking like I said. Soaking with say a bit of rag stuffed over the area and going back over an hour or so rewetting the rag many times. Warming the engine to soften the crap then any/all of the above (except maybe the soaking heavily in solvents for obvious reasons). Of course warming the engine can be a little self defeating as you are adding to the issue.

Just a point is there fresh crap there, and can you hear any leakage. Just in case it is an historical issue and they only cleaned it enough to get at the injectors and seals???? Long shot I know but hole in wiper panel means they've done it for the seals or even replacing the injectors in which case new seals would/should have been done.

I've had the oil cooler split as well but didn't replace anything in the cooling system and so far seems OK. Still got a bit of oil working it's way to the top that I didn't obviously get out of some nook and cranny. I've come across a product to run through the system to emulsify the oil and flush the system again which I'll do soon. I only did it originally with some degreasers. I ended up bypassing the original water based cooler and plumbing in an air cooler out the front so it can't happen again. Previous owner had it happen once too, so my engine has done it twice.

Thanks Fester I've been reading through the mb forum and found alot of info Im after

The funny thing is I have no chuffing noise or smell of diesel any where on the jeep but do have alot of wet oil even after cleaning it up to make sure it's not old crap, but it comes back pretty quickly as for someone already touching it they made a mess of everything.... Broken clips, broken plugs, bolts missing all over the place and alot of what looks to be silicon around the rear injector and marks on it as if someone was trying to uses vice grips to remove it.....

I think I'll buy all the bits and pieces to replace the seals and see how I go..

It almost looks like someone did start to remove them but gave up when they couldn't remove one as injector 5 is the only one with a new stretch bolt and the rest are all old still..
