Tube guards O.K.!!!
Allright.. after one unsuccessful attempt, cos i was using the wrong size tube in the $100 bender, i managed to fabricate a pair of tube guards with a 4 inch built in steel flare!!
I have written down all the steps and measurements and the second guard worked out exactly the same as the first.I used 25mm nom.(32mm outside diam) by 3 mm thick pipe and bent it to a plan and sizes that sort of followed the shape of the original guard but comes right back almost to nothing at the firewall and right up to the top of the guard. Then i unpicked the inner guard from the outer with a flat screwdriver and welded the inner piece to my tube frame and left it short at the front, where i tacked in a filler piece of steel to make up the 100mm difference. The outer guard is pretty much cut to only leave about 20mm outside the bonnet line and the vertical section at the rear is trimmed to the tube.I made a cardboard template for the 1.2mm thick sheet for the top of the guard and tacked it in with the mig. The tube frame is held together inside the original guard with a piece of 40x40mm angle that gets bolted thru original holes and the front has a piece of 65mm flat that gets bent to the grill shape and has a little corner brace and is this wide to take the 100mm infill of the inner guard.
The steel is tack welded inside and out so as not to distort it and then Sikkaflexed before painting..
cheers
