Bill,

That max torque and KW at ultra high rpm ( for 4wd) combined with heavy weight makes for pretty bad fuel consumption in petrol KJ, especially for such a small vehicle, not much usable range in the outback from 75L tank there. I think the diesel is the only sensible choice for a KJ headed for much off-road work if you don't mind skipping the traffic light drag races.

Hi Wooders,

Yes diesel man command trac ( '231) only petrol auto selec-trac ( '242) only.

Electronic diesel is nearly stall proof, especially in low range, and has bags of torque down to below 2000rpm. Torque-converter largely redundant with such engines, better to stick with downhill engine braking of high compression diesel than go for auto with marginal improvement over deisel manual up-hill. In fact some argue low speed diesel idle up hills is better than torque-converter as wheels don't suddenly "spin-up" when they lose traction, diesel engine does not have the "wind-up" of the torque-converter.

Lack of auto on diesel engine just means you can't be lazy in the city.
