Self help time for slow diesel fill problem
I have the same problem as most with filling my tank, i'll summarise it below then lay out my plan - tell me what you think and if you will get together with me to fix it.
The problem
When filling the tank with diesel you have to have the pump running incredibly slowly (dribbling) and even then it cuts off every few seconds, meaning it takes 10 to 15 mins to fill up from empty.
It makes no difference what angle you put the pump nozzle in the filler neck at all.
If you make the mistake of pulling the trigger on the fuel pump normally (even with an empty fuel tank) diesel will spurt back out of the tank all over you creating a health hazard and a potentially dangerous situation as the pumps cannot shut off fast enough to cope with the severe filling problem that Diesel Jeeps have.
If you back the pump nozzle out of the filler neck so that you can then see down the filler neck and try to hose the fuel in like that, the filler neck fills to the top within seconds and you then have to balance the flow of fuel from pump with the speed the the fuel goes into the tank, again you can only have the pump on slow because it just does not go down quickly enough. (If you could piss diesel and had a prostate problem it still could not take the flow rate and would back up).
The mechanic who looked at mine for its first service yesterday said it is not that it has been fitted with an unleaded filler tube or that the tank breathers are not working. It seems to him to be because where normally the hose to the tank after the fuel leaves the small filler neck would be quite large (much bigger than the neck size), on the Jeep it stays the same size all the way to the tank (ie. about inch ID hose the whole way). Small wonder it does not work to well. He says that without enough people raising the issue to jeep it will just get ignored.
Plan of action.
1. Sign on to this thread if you have this slow filling problem and are willing to write a short letter to Jeep in unison with others as detailed below.
2. We all settle on the same address at jeep to write too (suggestions especially from anyone in the industry would be welcome with regard to this).
3. Make sure you approach every JK diesel owner you see to ask if they have the problem and if they are willing to help get it fixed. If the dealers and fixers on the forum here could contact their JK diesel client base to ask if they would like to help as well that would be great.
4. We will set a date (I propose 12/11/2007) as our day to coordinate and see how many people we have ready to write in. We will then agree to all post letters on the same day (I propose 14/11/2007) to the same Jeep address, complaining of the same issue and requesting a written reply, and some action on the grounds that the problem is not only an annoying defect in an otherwise Great Jeep, but could pose serious health and safety issues on the occasions that operators do get sprayed with diesel fuel. This many letters all arriving simultaneously for the same problem should not slip by unnoticed.
