Lots of storage space. Well that rules out a Wrangler. You'll find that even the Unlimited doesn't have a great deal of space because the roll cage takes up a lot of usable room in the back.

My JK 4 door was great for the missus and I but as soon as you wanted someone in the back, you realise that there isn't a great deal of storage space especially if you have rear drawers, dual battery and a fridge. I'd tow a box trailer if I was taking extra passengers camping.

For what you want to do, I'd be looking at the diesel. If you must go petrol, don't get the 3.8 (07 - 11). It's a good reliable motor, don't get me wrong (I had one for 5 years and loved it), but it's down on power and really loves a drink compared to the 3.6L. As humdingerslammer pointed out, those must haves, are must haves, but they add a lot of weight.

Notwithstanding other things, the vehicle will need at least all terrain tyres (shod X6) a 2" lift, airbags at rear, decent shocks a half size roof rack, decent distance driving lights (LED preferably) fitted to some sort of front bar and a tow bar fitted. You will also need a two way CB radio. U also might want to invest in more comfortable front seats. I removed the rear ones and have fitted drawers and a fridge.
Any details and/or pics of your trailer? Did you spend much?

Would also love to see what you did with the rear. I plan to remove two of the three rear seats and getting/making something like this:

Would anyone have the dimensions for the rear space with the double seat removed??

Removing the rear seat and building a platform is a good idea if it's just the two of you for extended travelling.

I did that in my TJ Wrangler but with the JK I left them in and just threw our gear on the back seat.

As you can see by the image below of mine, there was no room in the back after I fitted the fridge and draws.

Towing a camper trailer also makes it easier because it carries most of your gear.

Even just a decent 6x4 box trailer will work wonders. That’s what I use on my admittedly small in storage TJ. Being a TJ fan, to assist the storage issue I have an engineer certified tubular steel roof rack.
