Default Convince me to buy an XJ

G'day, I'm in the market for a new 4b and have a budgjet of about 8k. looking for something to take the kids to the beach and camping trips, prefferable a wagon, 6 cylinder..........this is why I'm here because there are soooo many tidy XJ's on the market in my price range....some quite modified which would be nice.....and they are perfect for my needs......

my dilemma is....why does everyone I talk to try to talk me out of buying a jeep. The old saying "buy cheap pay for it in repair costs...better off paying a bit extra for a toyota for reliability and cheaper parts bla bla bla......."

are there people here who have regretted buying a jeep for this reason or another? are they as dear to fix as everyone who doesnt have one thinks?

Feel free to make any comments....

I owned a XJ for 3 years it was a 94 sport model (Stock) . It was great fun. I did however have some problems nothing major and nothing that would have cost more than your average 4WD to fix.

Major problems for me was the overheating. It is common from what I have read. This may pose a problem if you enjoy sand driving which I do but can be fixed with aftermarket parts for a reasonable price. I would buy a XJ again but am interested now in the 4 Dr JK.

Parts can be a problem but there are some Jeep wreckers and it helps if you know where these are as they are a good place to source parts.

$6k for an XJ ... or $6k to get an old landcruiser diesel injector pump fully rebuilt properly ??? .... just one of many questions to ask yourself .....

Also ...

Is the vehicle big enough inside to carry all your gear and still have space & comfort for passenger travel ???

Are you prepared to upgrade, up to 15yr old, parts on an XJ to ensure it gives you trouble free service ??? ( something any similiar age vehicle brand needs anyway )

Checkout the XJ threads which will answer most of your questions
