03 Grand diesel stopping

Hubby's 03 diesel grand cuts out when accelerating from low revs. Seems to be from when idling through a town or working up an incline. Today tried dropping back a gear when accelerating, and car didn't stop although it did it twice on same road on Friday.. Anyone had anything similar and any clues on how to overcome it?
