Default Wombeyan Caves

Hi all

Has anyone been to these caves, if so, what it like coming from Sydney. I believe taking the Bowral turnoff is the interesting drive as that road is a bit more challenging.

I just want to go for the day, would that be considered do-able & what else is there to see or drive around there.

I've been there a few times. The only road in is ok as a unpaved road but often potholed and corrugated, I recommend you air down at the tunnel as you go in off the tarmac. You will need to take it easy as its narrow, with lots of turns and switchbacks, and oncoming traffic can present problems, there are often steep dropoffs on the side with little to stop you from going off. If your good at spotting wrecks in the canyon below there are a fair number down there.

The cave is good for a walk, and there is a small shop there. Camping is available at the Cave. If your more adventurous you can come in from Jenolan and do the Caves to Cave run but allow a weekend for that - camping at Dingo Dell or a couple of other spots is available on that route.

Nice place. Particularly pretty in Autumn. You can drive a sports car in from either Mittagong or Goulburn. The dingo dell route does need a 4WD, but I have gone through in company with Foresters.

I've done that run several times as a side trip returning from Sydney to Canberra - it's a really nice drive and highly recommended.

As others have said the road in is very narrow, so air-down and take it slowly.

Cheers,

ED
