Default Spare key 98 XJ Diesel

Hi all

What's the best way to get a spare key cut & programmed for a 98 XJ?
The Jeep I just purchased only came with one key, I've purchase a blank transponder key hoping to get a local key cutter here in Tamworth to look after it all however he has quoted me $200 to do the job. Any ideas? Would the jeep dealer be just as expensive?

Cheers

Sounds about the right price. A trick is to attach the transponder to the key barrel and just get a key cut. I couldn't get mine to work though.

$200 seems a little steep. Cutting the key shouldn't be more than $40, it's a basic cut as far as I know. I don't remember the coding process for the XJ whether it's easy or not but you shouldn't have to pay any more than 1/2 hour labour, $55. I was a Hyundai/Jeep technician at Woodleys from 2005-2011, give them a chance. They will better the $200 quote to get your business.

You will probably find this out yourself....AVOID the dealer like the plague! As an example, and I know you have a diesel, but they wanted to charge me $500 for a sensor that I shopped around for and got it for $125. Now I only shop at RockAuto.

Shopping centre shoe repair / key cut guys "mrminit" can do it for you. Somewhere around $160 for the key and programming.
- They are a pretty chunky key, but work.
