Why won't my worries just end with this! I found a coolant leak today, I can't tell where it is from yet so I'll have to keep my eye out ugh!

hey mate just reading through and thought id chime in with my experience.

overheating issues first and foremost get your radiator flushed (i believe you said you did earlier in thread.)

2nd with regards to damage these cast iron blocks take a hell of a beating, i was wheeling through some mud and the front of the radiator got clogged and i wasnt watching the temp gauge as i never usual needed to. it got to 150 degree's c before i noticed and then i had to try and limp her to the river a few kms up the road which involved driving until reaching running temps, shutting her down until cool and repeating finally reaching the river i drover back and forth for about 15 mins to clean out the majority of the mud out of the radiator to get it half working. i then topped up the radiator and a few coke bottles etc. after that it sat at about 105-110 all the way home as i was now using water instead of coolant it was boiling all the way home. i pulled over every 15 mins to top up the radiator.

conclusion i removed the radiator when i got home to clean it properly and thoroughly. while the radiator was out i noticed the water pump to be leaking (not surprising given the extreme temperatures the engine reached. i replaced the water pump and the viscous fan as after putting it all back together i noticed that was buggered too!

the engine was still running but a little rough. i changed the oil, filter and plugs and it ran much better but smoked when going above 3,000rpm. i took the car in for a check up and diagnostic and found the bore to be glazed a the rings shot. best cylinder has 120psi and the worst is 75. not long after this all happened we bought our first house and money has been tight so i cant afford to get someone else to rebuild the engine and dont feel confident doing it myself so i have just continued driving it as is keeping below 3,000rpm as much as possible and checking and topping up the oil (as required) whenever i fill up. that was back in 2011 and she is still going strong. yes she burn oil and chaffs a bit when i kick her in the guts but so far 6 years continued use with zero issues

The leak was from the top hose going into the thermostat housing, I think the clamp on there is a little too big for the hose. Anyway I pulled it off, reseated it and tightened it back up and it seems to have stopped. If I can be bothered I'll swap it over to a smaller clamp. But for now everything seems sweet!

I've also installed a transmission cooler over the last few weeks. I went with the davies-craig 677 universal cooler. I installed it inline with the radiator trans cooler. As for mounting I used these:

Aluminum Rubber Lined Cushioned P Clamp ID 15.9mm 5/8" AN 8 SS Hose A08 from eBay and some cable ties (EDIT: Supercheap auto have similar clamps for cheaper than eBay). Worked reasonably but required some patience and maneuvering.

And what she looks like after a wash
