Default New glow plugs but still long cranking?

Evening guys,

I did a glow plug change a few weeks ago, and a new controller last year, but I still get long cranking on a cold start.

I started it today after it sat for 2 weeks, and it needed 4 or 5 cranks to get it running, then it stumbled heavily at idle until I cleared its throat. Normally it's not that bad on a cold morning start, usually 2 or 3 cranks and it's running with the obligatory cloud of smoke.

Any ideas? Not throwing any codes (related to engine anyway!)

Cheers,

Robert

If it sat for two weeks, get someone to hold a voltmeter across the battery, when you first crank it and check the battery volt drop.

Is there any air/fuel leaks in your hoses or filter?

It is possible for the fuel to drain back into the tank letting air into the system and needing a longer time to turn over.

I had a similar issue with our recently purchased Commander, the fuel hose going to the filter had been replaced in the past and new hose clamps used, whoever did up the hose clamps overtightened them and put a small cut in the hose. I only noticed it as a small amount of diesel was sitting on top of the fuel filter after sitting overnight.

Car was hard to start after sitting overnight, The longer it wasn't started the harder it got to start.

I just fitted a new length of hose and a new hose clamp and is all good.

Apparantly it is common for the two hoses going to the fuel filter to crack and breakdown as they get warmin the valley and get moved and bent out of the way when changing the filter. Jeep in WA have none in stock at the moment.

I've replaced the hoses but I have a small leak in the filter from the water separator.

Hmmm...

Quick update here,

It would seem Ecovandal was on the money here, as I replaced the O rings on the filter and I've not had any issues since.

Another issue solved!

No idea unfortunately, I just took my neighbour's big kit of o rings and found a slightly larger one in wall thickness.

It did need some persuading.
