Totally admit my original concept of 4x4 was based around the fact of locking in a pair of axles, avoiding the " Open slip" issues!

So with the above quote.... seeming incorrect
When "part time" is selected, this is locking up front and back shafts with no slip!
"Full fime" can be used a daily drive selection. With slip/clutch..

Perhaps a typo, or Adrian didnt really know either!
Hey, I'm just learning and questioning as the thread is titled.
Not calling someone a crack head, when I don't possibly know myself it seems

I never bothered with the Select Trac or Command Trac names.
Part time is what the name implies, use it part of the time, not all the time, ie on slippery surfaces only. The center diff (if there is one) is locked.
Full time is for using 4x4 all the time time, with an open center diff.

NP231 has 2wd, part time 4wd and part time 4wd low range. There's no center diff in the NP231

NP242 has 2wd, full time 4wd, part time 4wd and part time 4wd low range. This one has a center diff, that's why it has full time 4wd.

There, I said it. It should've been said first hand.
And you probably should've said you don't know how the Jeep transfer cases work before the rant.

Yes, it all makes a lot more sense now.
The thread was not ever meant to be an attack at XJ's at all.
Due to my misinterpretation of classification of what makes a 4x4 such.
And I was really unfamiliar with the Jeeps transfer/center Diff etc...
Total novice!
Think I made that pretty clear!
But got totally confused with the post about "put it part time, and do a sharp turn on a hard surface..etc .."
To me at that point, due to my lack of knowledge....
Was describing symptoms of a diff lock engaged. And I couldn't understand how this could be happening with open diffs.
Never entered my head of two axles being locked up!
And I didn't understand the difference really between the selections..
But understand how a diff lock works.
Well I certainly understand it all a bit better now.
I only ever use it in low range, as where I take it is very steep , up or down.
Crawling pace....95%
I don't thrash it but.
I did have to go on YouTube to find out more about the running gear on XJ's.
And that link I posted for YouTube explained the running gear well.
As I wasn't really understanding the posts, and no one really explained the difference between "partime/fulltime"
Annoying I didn't know, because I would of often used fulltime on a lot of marble gravel roads.

If you're a total novice, then here's my suggestion for your first lesson. Read what you type before hitting the submit button.
Honestly I debated answering days ago but the tone of the thread suggested you were either trolling for a reaction, or.....
Anyhow remember on forums its easy to be misunderstood because some many elements of communication are omitted like body language etc.
If you want to learn there is a wealth of information and helpful people, but remember respect it a two way door that has slammed many on their way out.

Very true. Wisdom noted.
Due to my ignorance... I never put two and two together regarding a "center diff lock"
Mixing it up with the transfer case, as a general terminology.
Not a troll guys, but open to a good debate.
And it did end up getting catty.....
Wasn't my original intentions at first in any form.
So yes..... I won't be giving out any advice on 4x4 specs.!!!!!
So if I "sound" argumentative etc......
It probably means I don't understand.....
So my sincere apologize for being a novice in the 4x4 field.
Far from a stock item on a 308 blown LH Torana!!!!
One day I mite gain a bit of respect....?
Kool to shake hands.
Was getting some good view hits but!
Ha.
I will try in future to audit/edit p list in the future.
