Default Who's servicing your KL??

Just wondering where people are getting their KL's serviced?? You going to a dealer, or to an indepandant workshop or doing it yourself??? We just bought our KL. I'm a licenced mechanic with over 30 years experience and have serviced all my own cars using only the best oils and parts. With this one was thinking of taking it back to the dealer for servicing, in case it requires software updating during service (I assume they check for that right???). I've heard about previous updates that changed the way the transmission shifts to stop the clunking the early ones were experiencing. Don't want to miss out on an update because I'm servicing it myself.

Is yours a 2014 early model? If so does your voice activated navigation work?

I have been getting my services done by the dealer but it is really expensive and i dont believe they do a good job.

No. We bought ours brand new last week, but it's a mid 2015 build. I've found voice activated anything is next to useless. You say one thing and it hears something else, so we don't use it. I'm pretty sure the servicing will be average, which is why I'd prefer to do it myself. I think I may end up taking it in for the first servic, and if I'm not happy with it, I'll do every one after that myself

I'm an aircraft mechanic too so been in the same situation.

Before going any further here's some tips and info:
*Our KL came with the AMERICAN Warranty and Service booklet - there is a specific AUSTRALIAN one available! The Aussie one has blue and white cover rather than the olive green and other colours that the American one has. If you don't have the "Australian Service & Warranty Handbook" then chase ur dealer to get one - it should be free. The Aussie one has service schedule sections properly specific to the KL and it's various engines.
*For 3.2V6 the current CORRECT Oil Filter part number is 68191349AB (which supercedes 68191349AA). The later filter apparently improves low rpm oil pressure and reduces startup "rattle". Make sure your dealer uses the correct filter...
*5W30 oil is fine to use - ie. doesn't have to be 5W20.
*If you have the Aussie service / warranty booklet have a good look at the schedule to get a picture of whats needed and when - that's a no brainer I realise - but note that extra stuff apart from just visuals and oil and filters starts at 24 months with brake fluid replacement.
*Our battery lasted just under 2 years - with new one costing $280 (was out of warranty) - so budget for that.
*For doing normal servicing myself, the only thing I haven't found info on yet is how to properly check the serpentine belt tensioner for condition. I'm still looking tho - and apart from anything else something should pop up on Youtube from US owners soon I should imagine.
*The oil drain plug is either fitted with an O ring or has a polymer insert of some sort. Even if it's an insert I'd imagine you could gouge it out and use a suitable o ring. Otherwise, grab a couple of new ones for future use while you're gettin your service done - maybe say to em that if you're happy enough with their work, service and cost then hopefully you'll never use those drain plugs... :-D

As you say, the important aspect of dealer servicing is the software updating and error code checking. The issue with dealers is finding a decent one Our local jeep stealership are a bunch of smug twits who will NOT do one iota more than the minimum required - and for the two services we've had done so far they've clearly only done the work in the last hour before we picked the car up - being a mechanic yourself you prolly get why that bothers me (I don't mean it was wrapped up in that hour - I mean the whole thing was DONE in that hour). The workshop work seems ok but they've only done oil changes and visuals so far - and the only extra I actually managed them to look at was alignment which they DID stuff up!

Couple of thoughts I've had are that you'd think that a dealer should surely be willing to do the software stuff alone for a fee - or alternatively if you use a good non dealership mechanic - ie. preferably someone who specialises in Jeep so are pretty much as good for expertise as a dealer and only lack the proprietary computer stuff - then perhaps they can get the computer stuff done by a dealer and oncharge to you - I haven't yet looked into whether that's something thats actually ever done or can be done - you'd likely have more insight into that than me.

My KL ('15 Limited diesel) 2 1/2 years old now has always been serviced by our dealership. The same for our WK2 Overland (MY14 and out of warranty) and prior to that, our WH Grand Cherokee.

As Trailfirst has pointed out, a good dealer/service centre makes the world of difference. Over the years we have built an excellent relationship with ours. I always get a loan vehicle for the day - either another KL or a Grand, although I did ask for a Renegade last service so I could test drive that (that was fun).

I always keep abreast of any TSBs and Uconnect updates so I know whats been issued by FCA regards these. Sometimes I do the Uconnect upgrades myself, other times I let the dealer do it. The vehicle has been rock solid over the 2+ years (no battery issue either) so I haven't requested any TSB updates. I have requested TSBs be applied to the our WK2 though over the years and that has never been an issue for the dealership. They have always done what I requested.

Congrats on the new purchase Elio. I hope its as trouble-free as both our Jeeps - the KL and the WK2.

Ours is a brand new '2015' model if that makes any sense. It had 27kms on it when we purchased it from a very large dealership. I was very disappointed when we picked it up. The level of detail was terrible, and as for the pre delivery, I doubt it was even looked at. It came washed, but little else. Had grotty hand prints on the hoodlining, dirt in the grille and when I checked the fluid levels, it needed a litre of engine oil. I do not think this car has had any of the updates to date. This was the straight after we got home from the car yard. I'm thinking if this is what they're like when they deliver a new car, I can't help but wonder what they're service department is like. Funnily enough, I have friends that have their car serviced at their sister dealership about 30 km's away and they reckon they're great. At the moment, I'm leading towards letting them do the 6 month and 12 month services for the updates. If I'm happy with the service level, I will take it back to them, but if not I'll take it into one of our workshops and do it myself.
