Also the conductor plate has to be the Jeep one not Mercedes as the pins are allocated differently

Thanks for the offer Bob - I had already ordered the replacement before I saw your message.
So latest update:
Conductor plate & solenoids all replaced with no change in behaviour. Still no codes shown.
No significant debris in the pan, and only a small amount of metallic residue on the magnet.
Just loaded onto a flatbed to go to St George EFI (Chris is a former Jeep technician). He's got some ideas on possible causes as well as spare parts on hand to test some theories. Hopefully some progress will be made before the weekend.

To close this saga out after well over a year and far too many dollars spent....
The cause of the power loss/limp mode was a faulty fuel temperature sensor which was recording the fuel temp as 100deg C, causing the ECU to trigger limp mode. The fix was replacing the fuel filter housing. This did not throw any codes or trigger the MIL, which confused multiple jeep techs. It was Chris from St George EFI that finally worked it out. I'd highly recommend him if you need your GC serviced in SW Sydney.
But this then led to other issues such as the stereo having an intermittent issue, the security module failing, and the Service 4WD error code with gear ratio error in 3rd. At this point I gave up and traded it in on a new BT50 for my son as he needed the cargo capacity for work.
Hopefully this can help someone else out down the track.

Well thats a left field one but really doesn't surprise me... I have a data dump on mine when its all running schmicko, if it craps out at least I have a bench mark for comparison .................... I would have though someone would have pinged if they got a read out of things...............

If the fuel was heating up that would have been the M Prop solenoid duty cycle playing up as that controls the fuel feed so that excess fuel supply is not returned to the tank as that causes the fuel in the tank to become too hot or maybe the fuel heater staying on.
To coin farwest, just my two cents worth

No issue with the fuel actually heating up, it was the sensor itself reporting an incorrect value. According to what I can find in tech notes, if the sensor fails it should report 0 or no value, not 100 deg C. This was a weird one as it was reporting a high but apparently plausible (in ECU terms) value.
The sensor is not a serviceable part as it's buried inside the fuel filter housing (AFAIK) so the solution was to replace the housing with a new one.
I've got a baseline dump for my 2018, and another for the 2008. Never had this one running properly long enough to take the baseline.

The thing is you have to find the odd one out amongst all the data, I would cross my fingers............. if one was a cluey sparky type a resisistor in the line could have shown a value the ECU would be happy with but what a lot of ginning around....
Bit like some changes you could do on the WG merc engine, if you got it wrong it would report a false outside temp as way colder and could end up overcharging and cooking the battery, the change had nothing to do with the battery system though so would be a big surprise......so many sensors ...
