Yep - $40 compared to $190 is still a significant jump though

I was meaning the Ebay one in my earlier link at $185 compared to the quoted $290 dealer price, saw those $30 jobs and they just sound suss to me..

I realise the quality of the EBay ones would be hard to quantify but to just carry one as a spare for $30 seems a good idea. Mine at the moment is fine but if I am outback later in the year, it would be reassuring to have it, just in case. I must admit the "ticking timebomb" side of the jeep parts is annoying. When things go is so random and age/mileage so variable; there is no logical pattern that you can rely on like most other vehicles I have owned,.........but it is such a great all-round vehicle, I wouldn't swap it.

Sorry, should've been more clear. The jump from a generic eBay one at $40 to the OEM eBay one you linked at $185 is still signifiant.

My mechanic implied he's had many customers use the cheapies with no issues. If the OEM one is likely to fail again anyway...

I like the idea of a cheapy for the spares box, I think the $185 while a bit high is certainly not over the top like one from a dealer, I do look at things genuine as being if they fail in the first place why buy another ????? and that applies to any brand or component.............. since Grands are built in China mostly from Chinese made parts I think its hit or miss as to quality, the same applies to well known bearings once it was Jap bearings is the way to go, sensors as well as other parts, they all have plants in China now so you never know where stuff comes from .......... its a gamble..

Cooler problems, EGR and DPF fails are not a Jeep thing, applies to any CRD vehicle... its just we hear about them a bit more......... I honestly don't think these Jeeps are any worse than the others really.... cant say about the servicing though.

Not sure where you heard Grands are built in China - they're all from Detroit, including export. Jeep's (recently closed) factory in China was producing Cherokee, Renegade, and Compass for some markets, as well as the China-only Grand Commander.

Parts are of course a different story, but imagine the cost of them if they weren't made with cheaper labour!

As an aside, Chinese manufacturing really isn't what it once was - made in China doesn't automatically mean poor quality. They have mastered the ability to build to a specified price/specification - be it high end high quality, middle of the road, or cheapie throw away.

The onus is really on the brand (i.e. Jeep / VM Motori) when it comes to specified quality and quality control.

I didn't mean Grands we have are built in China, meant they built their own which has now come to a close but did mean chinese sourced parts became easy enough, besides enough Made in China stamps on our Grands anyway, rims, dash and plastic bits and goodness knows what else so no different to other makes ..... I thought the Grand Commander looked near enough to a Grand albiet a Cherokee on steriods anyway........ like all things buyer beware, I know it was a revelation with the old WG when I pulled my MANN filter out of the box and instead of Made in Germany it had China, about then I just gave up.
