Default Time for tyres; which & where to get in Sydney area?

Well, the tiime has prematurely arrived to replace a set of tyres. The original 255/75 were quite worn when I picked up a bargain set of 5 245/75 silent armors. One has a nail just off the side of the tread, but that's ok for a spare still. The other day, however, a couple of hours after driving the car I found the front tyre dead flat. Bugger, but that's what repairers are for. $30 later all good. Went out a few hours later again & it's dead flat again! Checked where it had been fixed, all ok. So I kept looking, bead ok, valve ok, then found it. A small (~2mm long) split in the sidewall of the tyre! Well, that tyre is stuffed... Just wish I had found that leak first! Played a bit of musical tyres & put the 2 best of the 255s on the back with 2 good 245s on the front & one for the spare. No 4wd until I get them sorted, the specs say OD for OEM 255s od 814.. & 245s are 800mm!

So with 2 tyres down, I'm looking for a set of better off roads to replace them. Thinking 285/70 in say a KM2, or MT-762 or the like. But budgets being what they are, (everyone where I work having been dropped to 3 days per week recently...time to start looking for a new job), I will need to look for the best price for the desired size.

So, any suggestions on where are the best places to get a set in Sydney area? And which tyre should I look at realistically. Are the Maxxis significantly worse than BFGs? Are the Cooper S/Ts better off road?

Initial quote from local tyre place says $475 each for 285/70R17 Cooper S/Ts, can I get tyres significantly cheaper and is the extra cost of the more expensive ones worth it?

Help! Please?

I'm looking for MT tyres at the moment and I priced 285/70R17 Maxxis Bighorns recently in Melbourne. Best I could do was around the $350 mark. I've read good reports on them, so I'll be buying them next month.

If you're happy with the size of the 255 and 245 you could get 265/70R17 Nankang Mudstars. They are only about 3mm dia bigger than the 245 but the real attraction is the price, about $210 each. They are the same old fashoned pattern as the Maxxis Buckshots, which you can't buy here anymore. I don't think they'd be any good for a daily drive as they are very noisy and I don't think you'd get more than 40,000 km out of them, but I had them on my Patrol and they served me well in the High Country. For a play tyre they're great.

Looks like I'm going to have to keep looking. Although several tyre sellers told me that all 4WD tyres are hard to get at the moment, so they probably feel they don't have to discount.

Hi Grahame, I'd prefer the 285s really. I like the 255 better than the 245 & I have a 2" lift from the PO, so the larger would also look a bit more proportionate.

Wally, where did you get them from?
