Hey Richo, the only substantial length of "Old" Bells line of road that I can find on Google maps is just north of Clarence, but it looks like not much more than a dirt road - roughly 15 klms or so long. Am I looking in the wrong spot or do you think it's called something else? Cheers.

Your in the right area. Easiest thing to do is follow the power lines. Warning be carefull as i have seen this place completely change in one weekend to the next. From Driving it in a stock to being stuck with a 4" lift & lockers, same tracks, same holes & climbs

That's a good area. Another good spot is Mt Walker in Rydal. Both of these have awesome tracks but I wouldn't go alone unless I can be patient enough sticking to the easy sections.

Check out my Ride(s)
Wink Capertee

Try Mt Airly at Capertee.

The road in is not difficult to Airly but gets progressively more challenging the further you drive.

The views from the top are fantastic and a walk through the “Grotto” is a trip back in time with giant tree ferns and century old trees.

For access contact Col Riboux, his number is in the white pages or pm me

This video was taken a few months back past Airly on the tuffer sections.

http://youtu.be/rO9ry19bNpA

Airly is located approximately 8.5 km down the Glen Davis Rd from the Castlereagh Hwy at Capertee.

KKnut, couldn't tell you without getting the maps out, I'm from Melb and did on on a gps plotted ride.

It went for a few kms down then back up the side of a big series of gullies, and in many places was carved into the side of a cliff with big overhangs and sheer drops off the side of only a single car track. Had an old wire fence along the side in a lot of parts as your only protection from certain death if you tipped over the edge.

Was really rutted out and washed away in places.
I'll see if I can find my maps and get back to you. Certainly wasn't a straight track under power lines.

Edit:
Ok, been looking at maps and thinking about it... From Katoomba, followed the railway line for a fair way towards Lithgow. Some way along the main road which was generally starting to wind it's way down the hill, turned left into a undivided bitumen road which then wound it's way down the hills for a fair way, was very few houses if any along here, mainly bushland.
Emerged into a more occupied area, but the terrain was more like heavily treed, lots of ferns, very green and lots of old guesthouses etc with sculpted gardens etc?
The road (bitumen )sort of stopped and became a dirt track, sort of a mix of hard packed sand and limestone.... At the start of this there was a sign saying dry weather road only, 4wd only. At the other end of this it was signposted old bells line of road, and emerged from the bush into a semi rural area with big houses on large blocks, then suddenly we turned left onto a main road with double lines which then headed down a hill, towards Richmond I think?
Stayed the night at Wisemans ferry, which was about an hour on from that point after crossing the Hawkesbury on a car ferry first... Turned left after the ferry, Wisemans was about 25 mins further on.

The road ( if you can call it that) looked like it was very old, probably carved out of the cliffs by convict labour at a guess. Was a cool way to head into Sydney, for sure.
