Last week-end my two sons and I, together with about 20 other people from our local 4wd club, went to Cape Palmerston (about 80kms south of Mackay in central Queensland) to do a clean-up run by Eco-Barge and Parks & Wildlife. Together in just over two hours we managed to collect 970 kg of rubbish from only a 3 km stretch of coastline at Cape Palmerston. Most of the rubbish collected was washed up as a result of this year's cyclone season, with bottles, thongs and foam making up about half of the rubbish. Unfortunately, much of the rubbish, in the form of camping rubbish, empty stubbies and cans, shopping bags, car tyres, etc., was deposited by careless locals who clearly are abusing the access to this wonderful area.
I was happy to fly the jeep flag but the day was really about my 4wd club giving back to an area that we enjoy very much.
The weather gods were kind to us and here are my boys ready to get into it
