i have a 96 grand cherokee with two noisey diff's and have been quoted $3200 each plus labour. (Bit steep?) does any one now what type of diff this jeep carries and a good machanic in around Heidelberg, melb, Vic
Look in the Suppliers Thread in the Stickies section of this site. Two shops in Melb that know their jeeps are USA4x4 and Poly4x4. Try one of them. I am SURE they will be able to resolve your issues for a lot less.

also try Wombat Offroad (ex ProComp) in Ringwood. They did my front diff (ratios and true-trac), and I know they have rebuilt/service other dana diffs from GCs in the recent past.
