Default Click click click... start

After searching I've read through a lot of threads with similar issues, but it doesn't seem to apply to me (at least not directly).

In short, for the past 18 months, when I try to start the ol WG I sometimes get a "click" similar to when a starter is dying. Except every time a starter has died on any of my other cars it's rather rapid and gets progressively worse over a period of a few months.. with the WG it's totally random, it will fire up first time 20 times in a row, then when it doesn't it might take between 2 - 20 turns of the key (each time hearing the 'click') until the engine cranks.

It's not the parking sensor/neutral switch or whatever it's called because I've tried out of park and in neutral and the same thing happens.

Anyone with an OBDIII in Perth happy to plug it in and see what the hell is going on? I'm in Cottesloe but obviously happy to drive anywhere and will bring along a 6 pack for your time

The starter and its wiring gets very hot on the 4.7 motor and the crank wire connector ( the small wire to the starter motor) is a known trouble spot it is often better to re-terminate that cable to cure intermittent engagement

Yep, mine had this not long ago, for ages I'm thought it was the neutral safety switch, then it would crank slowly in hot weather, then not at all. Changed the connector and all has been good

Had this with my XJ diesel. Turned out the large connection from the solenoid to the starter was corroded. Undid the nut, rubbed all surfaces with wet & dry until clean, put back together with plenty of electrical grease & problem solved.
