Default size of fuel tank

After our last trip, we found we were regularly putting 110L into a 90L tank and over 200L into a 170L tank at many of the the fuel stops.. Many of the servos never get their machines calibrated it seems, esp when they are in the middle of nowhere. Overall though we've found QLD fuel outlets much more accurate. Some of the stations down south actually display a sticker that states when they were last calibrated by the dept of weights and measures.

Hi,

Stock Cherokee tank, and most other 4wd too, has considerable expansion, maybe I think 20%, capacity to be sure the charcoal can doesn't flood. This has been the case since sealed vapour tanks became law in the 1970s.
If you park at the right angle, shake the car etc etc, you can often get a bit more fuel into this air pocket.

Marcus ohms (www.gojeep.rockcrawler.com) has modified the breather in his tank to take advantage of the air space. See his website for details of how to get the extra capacity. If you really want capacity try the 120L Long ranger tank, although is does hang low, best to only fit if you have some lift.

Default size of fuel tank

I managed to get 84 litres into my 97 Cherokee's tank on one occasion. It took a long time to just dribble it in and a bit of "rockin' the Jeep", (that's about all the stock roof bars are good for ;-))but I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you were planning to drive a distance straight away.If you don't,and the tank is brimfull, you'll end up with a number of litres on your garage floor......
