If you fill the correct amount of coolant concentrate first then top off with distilled water, you will not have a problem with ratios. As said, you can't control how much residual water you have in the system, but you can control how much coolant concentrate you have in there. You just need to keep flushing till all of the old coolant mix is gone, but you need to do that anyway.

As an extra safe bet if you are worried, you can buy a hydrometer from eBay suitable for testing coolant strength for little money.

Do it right, distilled water with a 50:50 mix. It's one of those things where more is actually less.

I just drained the coolant on my 2009 CRD and all i got out from the drivers side drain plug at bottom of the radiator was 6L of coolant.

The specs say its 12L for the whole coolant system.

What a pain it was to keep filling up and draining it to hopefully get out all the old coolant. I think I must have refilled and drained about 5 times.

I used Tectaloy HD2 acidic radiator flush only because i noticed when i changed the water pump there was quite a bit of rust in there.

I couldnt find anyone that sold Valvoline Zerex so i ended up with Penrite 4yr Hoat green coolant.

Knowing that there was 6L of water still inside i just filled up with 6L of concentrate so i guess that will give me 50%.

Shame i couldnt remove the 6L of tap water stuck in there.

So I eventually got around to changing fluid. I did as MidnightMods suggested and opened drain on radiator while a hose added water to reservoir. I let it run for 20 minutes or so. The water was very clean by the end. I then poured distilled water through. I then added 6 litres of concentrate. I got about 4 or 5 litres of distilled water in too. So I changed about 11 of the 12 litres. Plus the water sitting in it should have been mostly distilled. Driving to work this morning the temperature gauge did seem to be slightly lower. Hard to tell with a small gauge. Really need to use my obd reader on a hot day.

It's much more stable on a hotter day, I have had some car's come in on hot days (30deg+) and after a timing belt and water pump change, along with a flush and G05 installed they run around 4-6degs cooler then before.
