Alright I've been really busy lately so I had a mechanic look at the JK for me. They managed to get the car started but it didn't run for long. After that the motor wouldn't start even with a jump pack. My mechanic has told me the Crank Position Sensor is probably the culprit and the smoke from the motor was un burnt diesel. Can anyone confirm that the sensor under the bellhousing where the clutch and flywheel is the Crank Position Sensor? The Crank still turns over by hand with a breaker bar with not much effort so I'm going to purchase the sensor and hopefully it's sorted. Does anyone know where to buy one in Australia I can only find the part in the good ol USA and Britain.

Gee, it's gone from a new motor to a crank sensor... got to be happy about that
Yes, that is the crank angle senor on the bell housing. The sensor should have some resistance across it, if its infinite, its no good. Should also put an oscilloscope across the output to confirm. I'd just get a price off the jeep dealer personally.

Crank angle sensor and Cam sensor tells the PCM to fire the injectors once fuel rail pressure reaches a point.. I would be taking it to someone who knows what they are looking at and not guessing, replacing that sensor is a big job and not a part you want to change if you "think" its that part..

A simple scan tool will tell you what the fuel rail pressure is and if injectors are firing while cranking, and if the motor is cranking with a RPM signal output.. the sensor is fine..

Whew ! Hope it is a sensor issue and not the motor.
Got over 80,000 miles on my 2007 build, so stuff like this occupies your thoughts some what.
As Midnight states its always worth paying for experienced Technicians (if you can find them) no point in guessing.

Out of interest what scanner would be useful to have for the CRD

My local Jeep dealers been very helpful over the last few years, but the franchise was passed on a year ago, everyone left, but the MOST important head tech stayed, however he's now pissed off so he's leaving, (along with the 2nd intake of staff) and taking his two good proteges with him
