The factory cooler has internal fins in the tube to help move the oil around. I couldn't see them until I cut the tube near the cooler to fit my new cooler in series with the old unit. Also the factory cooler tubes are flattened in the cooler area which helps get the oil near the tube walls. I can't comment on the factory coolers suitablity for an XJ (seems too small to me), but it's design and construction appears to be very good for a tube and fin design.

Cheers for that Fabio ...

Will cut a spare one up for some pics to include in the thread.

All the ones I checked out were hollow inside tho ... so the thing filled with oil which would cool against the walls ... but the cental flow would just pass straight thru with minimal cooling benefit.

Having the fins extended into the inside of the tube should make quite a bit of difference by comparison.

Any bends in the interior fins to tumble the oil around a bit ???
No mate, all straight. I have been thinking, I want to try and baffle it somehow, I dont know how as yet. I think this would be an improvement.

Some temps when you get your gauge in would be good.
No worries. I'm looking at gauges now. I think I'll get a cheep electric for now. If I like it I will go a decent mechanical.
Damn!! Now I gotta put some blurb out here too. Bit more than the 10 characters it asked for but..

Besides the Davis Craig Trans Oil Coolers that I know about. Is there any other good quality Trans Oil coolers available in Aus to go in the XJ. On Naxja they talk about the B&M Coolers as being fairly good. Not to sure if they are avail in Aus.

I ended up with one of these recently .... because the place I was getting some other stuff - had them handy.

http://www.pwr.com.au/#/view=products/s=os/

Probably paid a bit extra as it was from reseller .... but still cheaper than rec retail for the large model, daviescraig one.

Should have it fitted soon for a trial

The B&M get good reviews on the yank forums and elsewhere.

Hey Carves. Thanks for the info. Which size did you end up with and will you mount it where the OEM cooler exists.

280mm wide
255mm high
19mm thick

Has 4 available mounting holes in top & bottom ( or side ) panels making the total height about 300mm.

Will probably end up in front of the aux fan ... depending on ease of plumbing

Plan is to get it (finally) fitted this week ... so will throw some pics up when finished.
